March 10 — the circle of camellia life
I’m back at Descanso Gardens this weekend. More camellias are blooming — I overheard the tour guide say they are likely to be in flower till May — longer than usual.
I’ve been to Descanso many times, but there are always new paths to discover. All of these shots were from trails I hadn’t explored before.
The first and last shots are HDR, using Nik HDR Efex Pro 2. . The middle shot uses a technique I heard on Kelby Training: In Photoshop, duplicate your background layer and use the vivid light blending mode. Invert it, and apply surface blur at 40%. Merge the files, eliminate the funky looking surface blur layer, and desaturate your merged layer. Use the overlay blending mode. An extra step you can take, which I didn’t do with this photo, is merge your layers, apply gaussian blur at 50%, and use the soft light blending mode. You can always back off the effects by reducing your layer opacity.
Comments welcome, let me know what you think.
