May 7 — Matilija poppy and honeybee

Matilija poppy and honeybee at Descanso Gardens.

You can’t tell from the photo, but this poppy was on a bush that was a good 6 feet tall. According to calflora.net, this type of poppy has the biggest bloom of any plant native to California and looks “like fried eggs.”

  1. Beautiful photo! Matilija Poppy (Romneya) grow up here in British Columbia and my grandmother used to grow them. In my memory they were huge – mind you I was probably 5 years old and 3 feet tall 😉 One of those plants I’ve always wanted to get but haven’t done so yet.
